ACADEMIC MOBILITY
The Department has come a long way of formation and development, since the establishment of the Ethics, Aesthetics and Logic Department in September 1960, further separation the Ethics and Aesthetics Department in 1968 and its renaming into Ethics, Aesthetics and Culture Studies Department in 1989 due to the introduction of cultural studies subjects in a higher education system. The first Chairman of the Department was Professor V.O Kudin, whose main areas of research were aesthetics, theory and history of cinema, history of culture and education ("Art and Spiritual World of Youth" – K., 1983, "Education in the Information Society." – K., 1998, "Mass Media and Vocational Training" – K., 2002, "Education in the Fate of Nations" – K., 2007), the first Ukrainian-language textbook on aesthetics ("Aesthetics". – K., 1962 ). The fresh Department at different times was also chaired by Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor V.T. Pavlov Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor, further Academician V.I. Shynkaruk, one of the founders of the Kyiv School of Philosophy.
For 26 years – from 1976 to 2002 – the Department was headed by Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor L.T. Levchuk, the author of a number of monographs, textbooks and manuals, the head of many writing teams, awarded with the Award of the President of Ukraine – the Order "For Merits" of the third degree. The major areas of Professor L.T. Levchuk’s research include specificity of aesthetic knowledge, artistic endeavor, trends in aesthetic development in the ХХ century (Ukrainian and Western), psychoanalysis and artistic creativity ("Psychoanalysis and Artistic Creativity" (in Slovak). – Bratislava, 1983, "Psychoanalysis: from Unconscious to "Fatigue from Consciousness". – K., 1989, "Western European Aesthetics of the ХХ century". – K., 1997, "Psychoanalysis: History, Theory, Art Practice". – K., 2002, "Ukrainian Aesthetics: Tradition and Modernity".- K., 2011).
In different years, the Department employed such scholars: Professors A.S. Kanarskyi, O. I. Levytska, O.I. Fortov, Associate Professors L.S. Gorbatova, D. Y. Kucheriuk, O.M. Linchuk.
Since 2002, the department has been chaired by Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor V.I. Panchenko, which effectively maintains the research and teaching traditions of the Department and carries out scientific development of aesthetics categorical system, cultural aspects of artistic endeavours, cultural institutes and cultural policy ("Aesthetic Activity and Sphere of its Manifestation". – K., 1996, Art in Culture Context." – K., 1998).
Preserving the unity and continuity in theory-search line, the Department gained wide public recognition. The first Department Chairman Professor V.O. Kudin directed its main efforts on the training of highly-qualified ethicians and aestheticians, craftsmanship, extending teaching of ethics and aesthetics in Higher Education of Ukraine, publication of relevant textbooks and monographs. Over 30 years, the Department published a scientific collection "Ethics and Aesthetics" consolidating the theoretical efforts of domestic researchers.
During the lifetime of Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor A.S. Kanarskyi his works that opened a promising direction in the methodology of research of aesthetic process, nature of aesthetic sensibility, the genesis of its forms ("Dialectics of Aesthetic Process. Dialectics of Aesthetic as a Theory of Perception". – K., 1979, "Dialectics of Aesthetic Process. Genesis of Perception Culture". – K., 1982) became the rarity. Research of Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor O.I. Fortova aimed at developing the methodological framework, disclosure of the essential principles of moral and aesthetic, their dialectical unity in self-development of the human ("Moral Problems of Art Creativity. Social and Moral content of the Tragic and Comic". – K., 1977) were of great importance for the development of ethics and aesthetics. Issues of person’s moral development, esthetic basis of personality existence in the world and moral foundations of interpersonal relations were the focus of scientific research by Professor O.I. Levytska ("Moral Development of Person". – K., 1990). They, reputable scholars, largely formed the basis for the development of major research areas in the field of aesthetics and ethics and trained a new generation of Candidates and Doctors of Science.
The Philosophical Faculty has specialization in ethics and aesthetics for students of Philosophical Faculty, as well as postgraduate and doctoral studies majoring in "Ethics" - 09.00.07, "Aesthetics" - 09.00.08, "History and Theory of Culture" - 26.00.01. Over 20 years there has been Specialized Academic Board on Doctor and Candidate theses defense in these fields. Scientific legacy of the Department gained wide recognition not only in Ukraine but also abroad. Along with the national scholars the Department trained highly qualified specialists for the Soviet republics, Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Cuba, Poland, Syria. Led by the Department scholars, about 120 Candidates and 25 Doctors of Science were trained, whose developments have features of the scientific school formed over decades by ethical and aesthetic research of the Department scientists.
After Ukraine gained its independence, the Department directed its activities to update and expand the methodological principles of ethics, aesthetics and culturological research. It was the first in Ukraine to introduce culture studies course, having created basic syllabi, textbooks and manuals to ensure proper training, at the same time a new generation of textbooks in Ukrainian was created. Along with this culture studies issues were intensively introduced in the theoretical field of research.
During this period monographs by T.H. Abolina "Historic Fate of Morality (Philosophical Analysis of Moral Culture)" (K., 1992), V.I. Panchenko "Art in Culture Context" (K, 1998), O.I. Pavlova "Ontological Status of Aesthetic Experience" (K., 2008), L.T. Levchuk "Ukrainian Aesthetics: Tradition and Modern State" (K., 2011) were published.
The Department staff prepared a new generation of textbooks repeatedly updated and republished on key courses, taught by the Department, "History of World Culture" (K., 1994, 1998, 2000), "History of World Culture. Cultural regions" (K., 1996, 1998, 2001), "Aesthetics" (K., 1996, 2000). Also author tutorials were published: L.T. Levchuk "Western European Aesthetics of the ХХ century". (K., 1997), "Psychoanalysis: History, Theory, Artistic Practice" (K, 2002), V.I. Panchenko "Aesthetic Activity and Sphere of its Manifestation" (K, 1996), V.S. Hrytsenko, "Man and Culture: Manual" (K, 2000), V.H. Napadysta "History of Ethics in Ukraine (second half of XIX – early XX century)" (K, 2004).
Today scientists of the Department are focused on research areas topical for modern Ukraine. In the realm of theoretical and applied ethics it is the philosophical and methodological basis of values of human existence, discovering their existential-phenomenological origins, peculiarities of an ethical discourse of contemporary society, using applied ethics principles in activities of social institutes etc. In the field of aesthetics the main issues are the issues of analysis methodology, the ratio of classical and nonclassical aesthetic paradigms, analytical capacity of aesthetics as metatheory of art, research of its current state, study of historical paradigms and development of productive models of aesthetic education. Cultural studies researches are mostly focused on the typology of cultures and their regional features, including the specifics of their ethical and aesthetic patterns, on cultural evolution patterns. Recently, the Department has been actively investigating the issues of cultural policy, management and marketing in culture, social and cultural project activities.
Scientific researches of the Department are of relevant and practical nature, implemented in active research and project activities. Thus, in recent years the Department has actively worked in several international research projects such as:
- international project "Development of Training Course for Higher Educational Establishments on Cultural Awareness in Ukraine" with the support of the International Organization for Migration in Ukraine and the British Embassy in Ukraine (2009 - 2010);
- Tempus international project “Higher Education System Development for Social Partnership Improvement and Humanity Sciences Competitiveness (“HESDeSPI”, 2010 – 2013).
Cooperation with leading scientific centers of the EU (Italy, Portugal, Latvia and Lithuania) as well as Moldova, Georgia, Armenia enabled the department to determine priorities for research and to establish close and productive ties with scientists from higher educational establishments in these countries. This resulted in improving the educational process, updating curricula, preparing a new generation of textbooks on ethics, aesthetics and culturology and introducing new majors for students at the Philosophical Faculty. Recently the following textbooks have been published: "History of World Culture" (K, 2010), "Aesthetics" (K., 2010), "Applied Ethics" (K., 2011), "Man in Multicultural Society" (K., 2010), "Issue of Cultural Synthesis. Based on Materials of Latin America Culture" (K., 2011).
International cooperation within Tempus international project “Higher Education System Development for Social Partnership Improvement and Humanity Sciences Competitiveness (“HESDeSPI”, 2010 – 2013) facilitated the Department in the development of curricula taking into account the European experience and licensing the major "Cultural Studies" (6.020101) for the Philosophical Faculty. Curriculum and syllabi were developed subject to modernization of educational approaches to training of competitive professionals in the humanitarian sphere according to the European Qualification Framework, which is all-European structure, uniting qualifications of European countries into a single system. Such cooperation will provide all-European recognition of our graduates.
