Political sciences department

 

The Political Sciences Department was established in 1963 as the Scientific Communism Department for teaching of the scientific communism at the University (social and political theory of Marxism) - a discipline mandatory at that time. Over time, three scientific communism departments were established on its base: of Philosophical Faculty, Humanities Faculties and Natural Sciences Faculties.

Subsequently, the Scientific Communism Department of Philosophical Faculty was reorganized into the Department of Social and Political Issues of Modern Society (1990), Department of Theory and History of the Socio-Political Relations (1991), and in 1992 – Political Sciences Department. Since 1990, the Department provides training in major "Political Science" at the Philosophical Faculty. Kyiv State University was the first in the Soviet Union to introduce major "Political Science". Curriculum of major "Political Science" developed by the Department is in the basis of state standards of education in major "Political Science", which are used by all higher educational establishments of Ukraine training political scientists. Lecturers of the Department were the first Ukraine to prepare most syllabi of "Political Science" major subjects.

Professors O.V. Lazorenko, O.Y. Manoha, M.H Syrtsov, Associate Professors V.Y. Vilkov, V.B. Harin, A.D. Zalevskyi, O.H. Kovsh, S.M. Kruhlov, I.H. Motovilov, H.M. Ozadovskyi, H.T. Fedorov taught political science at the Department in different years:.

From 1963 to 1972, the Department was headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Y.D. Remezovskyi, who researched the Soviet period in the history of Ukraine, was the chief editor of the Republican collections of scientific works "Issues of Scientific Communism". In 1972 – 1989, the Department was chaired by Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor V.H. Antonenko, whose scientific research was related to issues of spiritual culture, spiritual life of society (the issues of aesthetics, religion, education of the individual) as well as the history of political thought in Ukraine ("Art. Religion. Reality". - K., 1973; "Ideology – Ideological basis of Artistic Creativity". – K., 1979, "Atheism and Cultural Progress". – K., 1977 (co-author), "Ukrainian Political Science: Origins and Evolution". – K., 1995 (co-author), "Political Science (History and Methodology): Textbook". – K., 2000 (co-author).

Since September 1989, the Department has been headed by Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor P. Shliakhtun, the author of more than 120 scientific and tutorial works, whose research interests include the study of social principles and legal regulation of political relations ("Political Science: Theory and History of Political Science: Textbook". – K., 2002, "Parliamentarism: Reference Dictionary". – К., 2003, "Constitutional Law: Glossary". – K., 2005, etc.).

Main directions of research work of the Department – the history of political thought in Ukraine and problems of the state formation of Ukraine. Based on the results of research numerous articles and monographs, textbooks, manuals, dictionaries are published. They include: O.I. The department provides professional training of political scientists of "Bachelor" degree majoring in "Theory of Politics", "Political Management", "Managing Social and Political Processes", "Master" degree majoring in "Theoretical Political Science", "Applied Political Science" , "Specialist" degree and supervises writing term papers and qualification papers by the students, candidate and doctoral theses by the postgraduate students. Over the years of its existence, the Department has trained more than two thousand students from Ukraine and foreign countries, including nearly a thousand of students-political scientists, as well as over 200 postgraduate students, to work in government agencies, research institutions, higher educational establishments, public and political organizations. Currently 14 postgraduate students have their postgraduate studies at the Department majoring in "Theory and History of Political Science" and "Political Institutions and Processes".

High level of postgraduate school efficiency is enhanced by specialized academic board for the defense of candidate and doctoral theses in political science, established by the Department, with Professor P.P. Shliakhtun as its chairman since 1990. During the operation of the specialized academic board postgraduate students, lecturers of university and other educational institutions in Ukraine and abroad defended 132 theses, including six – Doctor theses, at its meetings.
