Logic department

Teaching of logic in University of Kyiv has deep historical roots. Since the establishment of St. Volodymyr's University logic was one of the main subjects at various faculties. The first logic lecturer was Professor O.M. Novytskyi, who headed the Department of Logic, Psychology and History of Philosophy. In 1892-1906, a prominent philosopher, logician and psychologist H.I. Chelpanov worked at University of Kyiv. His classic textbook "Logic" was widely known among students and lecturers of the University.

In 1947, the Department received the status of an independent structural unit within the Philosophical Faculty. The first Logic Department Chairman was Professor F.Y. Moskalenko (1947 - 1953) who studied the theory of inductive conclusions in the history of Russian logic, logic issues in works of Chernyshevskyi. At this time, logic course was introduced at all Humanities faculties of University.

After the restoration of the Philosophical Faculty (1965), the Department was headed by Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor V.T. Pavlov, whose interests were focused on issues of relationship between the concepts, objective content and basic forms and laws of thinking, logical and methodological features of reason, space and time categories. Analyzing the logical structure of the latter, their role in building some logical and categorical structures, logical forms and laws, the scientist came to consideration of the logical and methodological features of these categories in the construct of a logical system of explanation and prediction methods using achievements of quantum mechanics, mathematics, mathematical logic apparatus to justify his point of view. V.T. Pavlov was among the first in Ukraine to teach the course of mathematical and modal logic. On his initiative, the Philosophical Faculty was the first to introduce standard courses "Classical Logic" and "Nonclassical Logic", whose author he was.

Academician of NAS of Ukraine, Director of the Institute of Philosophy of NAS of Ukraine Professor M.V. Popovych, Professors A.T. Ishmuratov, K.F. Rudenko, H.N. Sahach, Associate Professor I.M Voloshko, Zh.A. Duchenko, I.S. Semenov, O.M. Sheiko, Senior Lecturer I.I. Dyrda worked at the Logic Department at different times.

In 1993, the department was headed by Corresponding Member of NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor, now Dean of the Philosophical Faculty A.Y. Konversky, whose research interests include relevant scientific problems of logic and science methodology. Lately, he has studied the basic properties of the theory as the main conclusion of cognitive activity discovered the nature of the methodological analysis of scientific knowledge, defined the main features of the objective world of theory, analyzed the essence of the model of the theory justification (deductive and inductive): explored ways to identify specific scientific theory as a logical model, connection of justification theory issue with the main ideas of modern logic, which is described in the monograph ("Theory and its Rationale: Monograph" – K., 2000), as well as in a number of articles in scientific journals. He wrote books dedicated to both traditional logic and general ("Logic: Textbook". – K., 1998, "Logic (Traditional and Modern): Textbook". – K., 2004, "Logic: Textbook for Law Students". – K., 2004, "Traditional and Modern Logic: Textbook". – K., 2007, K., 2008). His books are translated and published in other countries. The scholar was awarded the Order "For Merit", awarded D. Chyzhevskyi Prize of NAS of Ukraine, he was awarded the honorary title "Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine".

Logic Department lecturers developed new syllabi of modern logic courses and special courses on logic issues: "Philosophical Issues of Modern Logic", "Theoretical Logic: Logical Syntax and Logical Semantics", "Logic of Scientific Knowledge," "Philosophy of Language (Analytic Tradition)", "Philosophical Issues of Logical Analysis of Scientific Knowledge" etc. Since 1993, the Department has been teaching new standard courses – "Rhetoric" and "Erystic".

Since 2005, the Department introduced majors of logic and logical subjects for future bachelors and masters. Considerable attention is paid to scientific and educational work: 5 Doctors of Philosophical Sciences, over 30 Candidates of Philosophical Sciences were trained.

Lecturers of the Department have written a number of new textbooks, manuals, dictionaries on logical issues, collections of exercises. They include: K.P. Rudenko "Logic" (1976), V.T. Pavlov, A.T. Ishmuratov, V.I. Omelianchyk "Modal Logic" (1982), N.A. Kolotilova "Rhetoric" (2007), H.M. Sahach "Rhetoric" (2000), I.V. Khomenko, I. Aleksiuk "Principles of Logic" (1997, 1998), I.V. Khomenko "Logic in Problems" (1998), I.V. Khomenko "Logic for Lawyers" (2000), I.V. Khomenko "Logic. Practice" (2001). I.V. Khomenko "Eristic" (2000, 2008), I.V. Khomenko "Logic" (2007), Y.A. Shcherbina "Logic for Lawyers" (2004, 2007).

Since 2004, the Department renewed (every two years) International conference on the teaching of logic and discipline of logical cycle, which was first held in 1985.

The Department cooperates with the Division of Logic and Methodology of Science of Institute of Philosophy of NAS of Ukraine, headed by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor M.V. Popovych. Effective form of experience sharing between lectures of the Department and the Division staff is carrying out permanent methodological workshops. In addition, the Department participates in international research projects and conferences jointly with foreign experts.

The main scientific issues in focus of the Department are problems associated with the logical and philosophical issues of the argumentation theory, as well as work in the field of problems of modern philosophical logic. Interest in this range of issues is caused by active development of new area of logic knowledge, called "informal logic". Informal logic, as opposed to formal, does not use complex technical system and is focused on research of people’s considerations, arguments, which they use in the real processes of communications. In this regard, the main focus is on analyzing different types of discourse, justifying schemes of rational and irrational (deviant) discourse, clarifying historical and logical basis of research of informal logic issues, studying rhetorical aspects of various discourses. Research work is also carried out in the field of contemporary philosophy of language and philosophical logic.
