“Polish Philosophy” or “Philosophy in Poland”?
This introductory lecture reports on a discussion of Polish historians of philosophy in the 20th century who discussed the concepts of “Polish philosophy” and “philosophy in Poland”. While discussing this subject they proposed some methodological remarks that proved to be useful for historians of Polish philosophy and still can be considered fruitful especially to research those histories of national philosophies that do not belong to the leading European philosophical traditions. One of the most important conclusions of this discussion, to which the speaker himself adheres, is that the history of Polish philosophy is an interdisciplinary area of study.

Witelo – the First Polish Philosopher.
The subject of this lecture is Witelo, 13th century naturalist, philosopher and mathematician, born in Legnica, who was internationally recognised and greatly contributed to natural sciences and philosophy of his times. The focus of this lecture is on his work On the Nature of Demons, and though this subject may sound unusual for 21st century audience, it reveals his methodological accuracy, passion for observation, open-mindedness, metaphilosophical assumptions, and a courage to articulate conclusions that opposed the views of his contemporaries.

Władysław Tatarkiewicz as a Philosopher and Historian of Philosophy.
Tatarkiewicz is beyond doubt one of the most important Polish philosophers, writers and university teachers of versatile interests. Three volumes of his History of Philosophy gained recognition in Poland and abroad and has already reached over twenty editions in Polish. Moreover, his works in ethics and aesthetics are published and discussed to this day, to mention only, for example, his study On Happiness. General presentation of Tatarkiewicz’s views will be accompanied by a discussion of his introduction to the History of Philosophy (available in Ukrainian) and his methodological premisses and instructions on how history of philosophy should be done.

Plato in Poland 1800–1950.
The subject of this lecture is Plato reception in modern Polish philosophy of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The nature of Plato’s philosophy allowed the process of reception reflect dominant trends in Polish philosophy of that times and was a culture-forming phaenomenon that exerted influence reaching far beyond academic philosophy. History of Polish Plato translations will be presented and three types and stages of Plato reception by Polish philosophers and historians of philosophy.
